HOW TO CLEAN & MAINTAIN OILED / UV OILED / LACQUERED ENGINEERED WOODEN FLOORING

An engineered hardwood floor is both a major investment and the biggest piece of furniture within a home or interior. If they are cared for & maintained, they can last a lifetime. Cleaning wood floors is easy, if done correctly. Daily cleaning of all kinds of wood floors can be done with a broom / vacuum cleaner or light mopping. The floor finish you choose however, determines how the regular and more intensive cleaning is carried out and which products, you should use. Both Natural and UV Oiled floors require regular maintenance, although more frequent maintenance is required for naturally oiled (hard wax oiled) floors.

Follow these simple tips and guidelines to maintain the finish and the natural beauty of your flooring:

Install preferably a large inset mat (ideally, to allow two steps across it - i.e. to enforce feet-wiping) or a good-quality doormat at entrances to trap dust and grit  (grit acts like sandpaper to any wood floor finish). Matting placed at external entrances will prolong the appearance and life of the floor whilst reducing the frequency of refurbishment.

  • Wood needs the right environment, ideally a room temperature between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius & around 50-65% relative air humidity. Wood is hygroscopic i.e. acts like a sponge & expands when it gains moisture, shrinks as it dries out.
  • Wipe up any water or other liquids spillages immediately.
  • Stick felt-pads under the legs of all furniture.
  • Lift furniture - do not drag & scratch your floor.
  • Vacuum / sweep regularly to collect dust and fluff. If you use a vacuum cleaner ensure you are always using the soft bristle setting toi avoid accidentally scratching the floor.
  • If possible, avoid heels!
  • Trim pets’ claws to stop your best friend from scratching your wooden floor.

UV OR HARD WAX OILED FINISH?

Whenever refinishing your engineered hard wood flooring, it is always important to ascertain the finish / top-coat applied to your floor and then refer to the oil / lacquer manufacturer’s directions beforehand. This is because the general process will differ.

HOW TO CARE FOR & MAINTAIN UV OILED ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORING

UV cured oiled floors differ from natural oiled floors as they are cured using UV lights. The other major difference is that a UV cured oiled floor should not be patch-repaired or have additional coats of oil applied immediately after installation  - as any new oils will not bond. No matter what finish you have; proper care and maintenance is absolutely essential, to keep it looking tip top. Follow these simple tips to maintain the finish and the natural beauty of your flooring:
